Benedict 's test is used to test for simple sugar such as carbohydrates and reducing sugars which includes some disaccharides and monosaturoides. This test works because carbohydrates reduces copper 2 ions in the benedict' s solution to copper 1 so the p.p.t formed change colour to orange to red if reducing sugars are present. When benedict's solution is heated in the presence of carbohydrates this solution changes colour from blue to orange or red. Benedict's test: 1. Place a sample of suspected substance in a test tube 2. Now add the benedict's reagent which is Cu2 SO4 to the test tube ehich is blue in colour. 3. The solution is then heated in a water bath for 3 - 5 minutes 4. The solution will change colour from blue to red if carbohydrates are present OBSERVATIONS 1.If the colour after boiling changes to green then about 0.1 % to 0.5 % sugar solution is present 2.If the colour after boiling changes to yellow then about 0.5% to 1 % sugar solution is present 3.If the colour after boiling changes to orange than about 1% to 1.5% sugar solution is present 4.If the colour after boiling changes to red than about 1.5% to 2% sugar solution is present
